At Cornerstone Center for the Arts, after school programs use the arts as a teaching tool.

“We teach through the arts, citizenship, confidence, and cooperation”, said Pam Nicholas, Cornerstone Center for the Arts' Director of Education.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts’ after school program enrollment has increased from 562 students in 2003 to 1725 students in 2005.

Nationally, on October 20, more than 7,500 communities and 1 million Americans will rally for after school programs, by participating in the 6th annual Lights On Afterschool! Middletown Idol 2005

Middletown Idol winner Rick Zellers with Todd Castor, Terry Bailey & Steve LindellWith a performance that ended with a standing ovation by many and some in tears, Rick Zellers was named the 2005 Middletown Idol. Judge Beth Leavell-Davis was impressed by his "versatility". She went on to say, "for those that are entering competitions, that song is an excellent example of what to choose....it showed us everything that you can do."

Rick chose the song "Watch the Lamb", a song recorded in 1986 by Hoosier and Christian artist Ray Bolz. It is a song about a father walking through Jerusalem with his two sons during the last days of Jesus Christ's life on earth.

With four of the five finalists choosing to sing inspirational songs, the final round of Middletown Idol felt like "church" according to judge Phil Dunn. The other finalists were Allison Saul (1st runner up), Sachel Joy Sloss (2nd runner up), Ryan Allen, and Andrea Clark.

Zellers was awarded a $500 cash prize. Saul received $250, and Sloss received $100.
