MUNCIE, IN – October 14, 2005. Mike Pence attended Cornerstone Center for the Arts celebration of after school programs at the Lights On Afterschool! Open House. At the Lights on Afterschool! Open House, parents and students met with Congressman Mike Pence and Muncie Deputy Mayor Phyllis Amburn, observed after school programs, participated in the arts, and received a tour of the building. After observing Congressman Pence, the Girl Scout and her mother met for an extended time with Congressman Pence. Lights On Afterschool! is a project of the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all children have access to after school programs by 2010. The National Presenting Sponsor of Lights On Afterschool! is the JCPenney Afterschool Fund. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is serving as Chair of Lights On Afterschool!.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts’ after school program enrollment has increased from 562 students in 2003 to 1725 students in 2005. Nationally, on October 20, more than 7,500 communities and 1 million Americans will rally for after school programs, by participating in the 6th annual Lights On Afterschool! This nationwide event calls attention to the importance of after school programs and the resources required to keep the lights on and the doors open. Rick chose the song "Watch the Lamb", a song recorded in 1986 by Hoosier and Christian artist Ray Bolz. It is a song about a father walking through Jerusalem with his two sons during the last days of Jesus Christ's life on earth. With four of the five finalists choosing to sing inspirational songs, the final round of Middletown Idol felt like "church" according to judge Phil Dunn. The other finalists were Allison Saul (1st runner up), Sachel Joy Sloss (2nd runner up), Ryan Allen, and Andrea Clark. Zellers was awarded a $500 cash prize. Saul received $250, and Sloss received $100.
Kick off your holiday season on Saturday, November 19th with Cornerstone's Candy Cane Lane! The community is invited to come and join in crafts, entertainment, purchase wreaths created by local artists and have a free picture with Santa on Candy Cane Lane. This is a free event that promises to bring visions of a delightful holiday season.
