Governor's Arts Awards in Review

The 2009 Governor’s Arts Awards were held on Friday, September 25th at Cornerstone. The evening was a great success and honored many outstanding Hoosier artists and arts supporters.

This bi-annual event showcased the thriving arts community in Muncie. This was only the second time this ceremony has been held outside of Indianapolis and our city shone!

The honorees were: Angela Brown, the International Violin Competition of  Indianapolis, George and Frances Ball Foundation, Ball Brothers Foundation, Sweetwater Sound, and the Vectren Corporation.  Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all the sponsors and the over 700 attendees.

Featured Artist India Cruse-Griffin

India Cruse-Griffin, a mixed media visual artist from Richmond, was selected from among five finalists submitting proposals to create the 2009 Governor’s Arts Awards. Her multi-media work is now on display in the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor.

India’s work is almost always associated with her childhood memories of growing up in Indiana. Her mixed media art includes layers of bold colors, shapes, and texture, using a combination of paint and collage to reveal an illusion of distance and space. This complex style of construction results in lasting impression of Indiana culture and community.

Griffin has taken part in selected state and national exhibitions dating back to the 1980s. Her work is featured in the public collections of Indiana Governor’s  residence, Indiana University East, Indiana University Bloomington Campus, IUPUI, Richmond Art Museum, and the Dunn Center. Griffin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from Ball State University, and currently teaches art in the Richmond  Community Schools.
